Class D Honor Band
The Class D All-State
Honor Band Clinic is held on the third Saturday
of March each year
at a Nebraska college. Host sites rotate between several different colleges.
The clinic includes a Jazz Band, a Symphonic
Band of about 80
players, and a Wind Ensemble of about
55 players. Three
clinicians are hired to work with the
different groups and present
a concert in the evening. Selection to these groups is made by audition
tapes, which are
due Dec. 1st. The tapes
are
then sent away to be judged. The results are announced by Jan.
20th.
The students are also
charged a registration fee.
Over the past 20 years,
the Class D All-State Band Clinic has done very well and has enjoyed
much
success. Stan Johnson of Shickley has
served as State Chairman
for several years, but
starting in 2007 he will be serving as Co-Chairman
along
with Patti Beyeler of Coleridge High School.
A Class D High School
has an enrollment of up to 74 students. Band sizes average 35. There approximately 150 Nebraska Class
D High Schools.

Dr. Ron Crocker Composes Piece for 20th Class
D Honor Band
The 20th Class
D All-State Honor Band Clinic was held March 2006. Dr. Ron
Crocker
of the University of Nebraska-Kearney composed a piece for the Wind
Ensemble entitled "Dancing With The Light," which he directed.
It was
recorded, and was a great experience for the students
and
the directors. Clinicians for 2006 were Mark Irvin (Gretna High
School)
for Jazz Band, Rick Mitchell (Kearney High School)
for
Symphonic Band, and Dr. Ron Crocker of UNK for the
Wind Ensemble.
The clinicians selected their own repertoire. A total of 154 students
were selected
from 245 audition tapes. The Class D All-State
Band Clinic is a self-supporting group. Funding
is made possible by charging admission to the concert, selling CD’s
of the performances, and charging students a registration fee. The
March 2006 concert was attended by 500
people. The 2007 clinic
will be held at the University of Nebraska-Kearney on
March
17th.
