Dave Young is a retired band director, still teaching part-time at Lincoln Southeast High School. He began his teaching career in Cottonwood Falls and Sedgwick, Kansas, before moving to Schuyler Central High School where he taught for nine years. In 1977 he moved to Bellevue East High School, where he taught for 21 years. After retiring from Bellevue East, Mr. Young continued to teach elementary band for two years in the Bellevue Public School. He moved to Lincoln in 2000, where he directed College View Academy High School Band for seven years (2002- 2009). He has been assistant band director at Lincoln Southeast High School for the past nine years. The 2010-11 school year will mark Mr. Young’s 48th year as a band director.

Mr. Young is a Past President, Treasurer, Marching Chairman, Adjudication Chairman and current Webmaster for NSBA. He is a recipient of the NSBA Don Lentz Outstanding Bandmaster Award, the NMEA Hall of Fame Award, NBA Citation for Excellence and Jazz, charter member of Phi Beta Mu, Teacher of the Year at Bellevue East, Bellevue Leader Person of the Year, three Bellevue “Champions for Children” Awards, and has been named as an Admiral in the Great Navy of Nebraska three times by three different governors. The award he is most proud of is his family. His daughter Kristi is a Speech-Language Pathologist in the Millard Schools. Kristi and her husband, Paul, have twin sons, Tyler and Zachery. Mr. Young’s son Michael was the sales manager for two different auto dealerships in Omaha. Michael had just completed his degree from Grace Bible College and had planned to go to seminary to become a Youth Pastor when died very unexpectedly Dec. 2, 2006. Mr. Young’s wife, Jeannette, is an Associate Professor of Music, Director of Music Education, and Chair of the Music Department at Nebraska Wesleyan University. The Bellevue East Marching Band received a superior rating in every contest entered during Mr. Young’s 21-year tenure at that school. They had a seventeen consecutive year streak of being undefeated in marching competitions in Nebraska that award a championship. The Bellevue East Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble played at NSBA three times, and the Jazz Ensemble once.

Mr. Young is also a music arranger and drill writer. He has judged in Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska.
